The more things change, the more they stay the same. That adage perfectly describes the consistently good food, service and experience you’ll have at Angelo’s. Famously perched on historic Federal Hill since 1924, Angelo’s is the oldest family-owned restaurant in Rhode Island. Now owned and operated by the third generation of dedicated family members, the regional Italian restaurant stays true to its heritage by serving traditional Southern Italian comfort food which includes the classics from 1924.
The cuisine was inspired by the food locals prepared in Farnese, a tiny Italian village west of Rome. As immigrants settled on Federal Hill, they knew they could count on the old world classics such as pasta and red sauce at Angelo’s. Created as a place for the workingman, the restaurant’s mission was to feed the neighborhood great food at great prices. A bit of history: French fries were added to the meatball plate during the Great Depression in an effort to hold customers over a bit longer until their next meal. Today the famous and uniquely paired dish features perfectly golden fries along with four large meatballs for only $5.50. Other original classics include pastine soup, baked macaroni, tripe, eggplant parmesan and stringbean salad. Loyalists refer to the tender veal & peppers and veal parmesan as “the best.” The braciola wowed Food Network chef Guy Fieri, as seen on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2012.
All menu items are still remarkably under $20, another nod to its storied history. The friendly wait staff is also tried and true, with some employed at the restaurant for multiple decades. Generations of families have been, and continue to be, delighted at this iconic Rhode Island restaurant.
